  • Traction is the application of pulling force applied to a part or extremity of the body for medical purposes.
  • Primarily used to manipulate and reduce fractures, maintain bone alignment, or prevent spinal injury.
  • Usually applied to arms, legs, spine, or pelvis.
  • Used since the time of the Ancient Greek Physician, Hippocrates.
  • Can be short-term e.g. at the scene of an accident or long-term as part of non-operative treatment.
