Derby Opening Benefits:
  • Ideal for patients with problem toes and forefoot that need minimal fuss and seams.

  • Relatively easy entry

  • Adjustable facings

  • Often a good basic shoe option

Low Opening Design Benefits:
  • Ideal for patients with a more rigid foot to allow easy access.

  • Great solution to fit with an AFO.

  • Allows patients to easily adapt tension down the length of the foot if they suffer periods of swelling.

  • Not recommended if someone has a bunion as the seam will rub.

U opening design benefits:
  • Can offer a more cosmetic appearance and style.

  • Minimal pressure across joints

  • Lower opening for easier access

  • Not recommended if the patient’s foot swells a lot.

  • The Velcro option in this style can allow easier access as the tongue can be pulled open.

Upper Materials: Pros and cons
  • Calf- easy to polish, looks smart and lasts a long time

  • Softy Grain- More modern appearance, softer and more pliable for tender feet, fun bright colour options

  • Waxy– 2 tone pull-up effect, will change, age and distress with use, can be hard wearing and gives a modern appearance.

  • Suede- Soft and supple but can stain easily and age more quickly, waterproofing spray is recommended with this material.

  • Nubuck- buffed finish can help footwear appear smaller in size if the patient is concerned about the width/ appearance of feet, soft and comfortable, waterproofing spray is best recommended for use with this material to prevent staining.

  • Reptile Print- Add interest and modern appearance can be used for whole shoe or small panels.

  • Neoprene-light weight and soft- ideally only used across the toe box and combined with a firmer material at the heel counter for stability. Doesn’t have a great lifespan. Good as a slipper option

Hex Mesh:
  • HEX MESH Our new lightweight upper material from Morón® provides an eye-catching design with several technical advantages.

  • Slight elasticity but retains its structure.

  • Breathable

  • Good abrasion resistance

  • Lightweight and flexible

  • Soft feel against the foot with in-built padding

Linings:

Our footwear can be lined with all standard materials including pigskin, calfskin, sheepskin and plush microfibre. We are pioneering the use of the On Steam® technical lining material in most of our designs, which is a microfibre with a leather-like appearance. This material outperforms leather in several areas.

  • High abrasion resistance when compared to leather
  • Consistent high-quality finish
  • Improved moisture absorbency
  • Anti-bacterial
  • Does not contain potentially harmful chemicals and is OEKO Tex 100 certified
  • Colourfast and resistant to light, abrasion & perspiration
  • Recyclable
  • Vegan certified

Conditions:
  • Upper material options depending on foot stability/ condition/risk factors/ activity level.

  • Soling options depending on patient use/ weight/ activity level.

Patients with neuropathy, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and any other sensory sensitive or limited sensation conditions will benefit from a style with minimal seams and low opening for easy access.  Be mindful of the location of seams in relation to problematic toes or joints of the foot.
